Preparation

Preparation is an important part of being successful at meditating. Developing a repetitive, ritualized routine will help anchor your mind and add to the ease of meditating.

Before you begin:

Unwind mentally. Unplug, turn off the cell phone, and step away from the computer mouse! Purify your body by taking a shower. Hot water is both soothing and relaxing plus cleanliness will allow you to be more comfortable during your session.

Dress comfortably. Wear comfortable, loosing fitting clothes to avoid distractions during your meditation session.

Have a dedicated space. Set aside a special meditation spot. Make sure the area is kept clean, quiet and perhaps subtly lit. You may even want to have your own spiritual alter for special objects, pictures, or other objects sacred to you. This will aid in concentration when your meditation session begins.

Use accessories. Meditation cushions, pillows, a bench, favorite chair or other amenities also enhance comfort.

Light incense or a scented candle. These will add the element of pleasant smell and also aid in concentrating.

Pray first. If the purpose of your meditation is religious or spiritual, spend a few moments praying to solidify your purpose.

Clear your mind. Sit with spiritual teachings or other inspirational materials that turn your mind towards matters of the soul before you begin to meditate.

Set aside a specific time. You may want a regular time slot to meditate at the same time each day.

Begin by deep breathing. This will calm your heart rate and increase blood flow and circulation before you begin your meditating session.

No matter what type of meditation you may choose for your practice, certain basics apply:

  • Focus on one subject or object at a time
  • As soon as your thoughts wander, bring them back to re-focus on the subject or object
  • Ignore distractions and sensations that distract you
  • There is no right or wrong way of meditating
  • It takes practice
